New rules from 1 October 2026

Gas tightness test checker

IGEM/UP/1B Edition 4 becomes the sole permitted method on 1 October 2026, replacing the old meter-type tables with Installation-Volume bands. This free checker handles both editions with the correct cutover: pick your test date and it applies the right rules — permissible drop, no perceptible movement, and purge volume.

Indicative guidance for competent persons

This tool gives indicative guidance only. It is not a substitute for the engineer’s own on-site assessment, the official standard, or the judgement of a suitably qualified, registered competent person. Gas work must only be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. A tightness test is a physical procedure on a live installation — this checker only tells you the acceptance figures the standard sets for your inputs.

Internal volume of the meter plus pipework, in cubic metres. Domestic IGEM/UP/1B scope is up to 0.035 m³.

The date decides the edition: both editions are valid to 30 September 2026; Edition 4 is the sole permitted method from 1 October 2026.

Transition period: Editions 3 and 4 are both valid until 30 Sep 2026. Edition 4 selected (recommended).

Enter your gauge reading to compare it against the permissible figure.

Basis: IGEM/UP/1B Edition 4 (IGEM Communication 1903, March 2026) via Gas Safe Technical Bulletin ISU 133; Edition 3 figures from the NICEIC/Certsure Pocket Guide (secondary source — lowest confidence, shown only during the transition window). Legal duties: Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 regs 22 & 33 (Great Britain) / the equivalent 2004 Regulations in Northern Ireland. IGEM/UP/1B is an industry standard, not legislation.
